Caryn Franklin AGAIN @Ravensbourne

Posted on 15 November 2013

This morning I had a delightful lecture given by Caryn Franklin about All Walks campaign Mix it Up!. It's not hard to tell that Caryn has experience a lot in the past 35 years, since she first came to fashion industry knowing less about it, than I know now. We as human beings all have dreams and majority of the times it relates with fashion and brands. Fashion industry is selling dreams for us of how it suppose to be and we starting to think "yea, I need this, I'm not good enough. I mean, look at these models and how perfect they always look". Sadly we all at the back of the our heads know that those girls are not real, that this type of 'beauty' doesn't exist. Adverts like D&G did with military man and boneless nude female model don't send any positive messages and makes me think, what the hell the whole team of people involve in it was thinking?
Because of people like Caryn Franklin we could see changes, not because she all by herself are making it, because of how she delivers message the students and as well industry people to see fashion in different way and don't really think just about people in front of camera but same importantly about people behind it.
I use this little occasion and have my first photo with famous and inspiring person - one and only - Caryn Franklin. Maybe I don't look like in my prettiest but oh well...

Fashion Faith Backstage

Posted on 10 November 2013

A week ago I introduced you all to how it feels like to be a fashion promotion student and also mention Juicebox magazine project, where my role is Creative Director.
I wish I could say "Oh, this role is heaven and didn't cost me any stress". Well, I wish. Actually, all this previous week I wasn't eating much, just like clementine for breakfast, glass of water around lunch time and evening... To be honest I can't really remember if there was anything. Lost weight? Hell yea! But no one should loose weight in this type of way.
Our Fashion in Faith photo-shoot was this Friday, which included 5 models from four different London agencies, three amazing make-up artist and hairstylist and of course Becky and Nathan - stylist and one and only - Nicole - photographer. For the first time arranging shoot myself I believe input wasn't small all make-up artist, hairstylist and models that I personally found were great! We all had such lovely time spending the day together. Wish there was no tragedies and bad incidents and they really were there... They always will when you deal with so many people and trying to make everything the highest standard possible. Decided to share backstage images from editorial shoot and hope to be able to show you the final outcome soon as well.

Promotion Student Life

Posted on 15 October 2013

Every time I pop out sentence about my promotion studies it follows with question: "Oh, what is that? What do you do?"
Let me tell you what means to study Fashion Promotion for me and how amazing it actually is. Promoting and most importantly understanding what you're promoting is crucial, you always have to be aware of things that going to happen in future, you basically predicting future of fashion based on consumers and industry people bahavior. This course gave me better understanding about way are you actually want that pair of shoes and not other one, sometimes I think it's becoming more like psychology lessons, not fashion. Every day I can check what is going to be new not next month, season, not even an year - I can check what is about to come in 3 years time from today. What colour is going to be the IT one and how badly sixteen years old fashionistas will fall for it. Promotion studies gives me knowledge of what Zara, Massimo Dutti, Chanel, Saint Laurent, Prada or Mango is going to have as their Autumn/Winter 14/15 collections. Let me show you some examples of research and inspiration points to see how I work. This is your 2015 summer wardrobe ideas, divas:)

But the most exciting part of all this course is to be able to create your own magazine. Imagine, 2 months intensive work with your colleagues and after that you're actually holding hard piece of YOUR OWN CREATED magazine. I cried a little...
At the moment we all again have exciting project to do. I become Creative Director of magazine main photo-shoot. DIRECTOR... Oh, I want to cry again haft of it happiness tears, other haft - stress. What it means is going to model agencies, writing them and hopping to get high standard models. Same with make-up artist, hair stylist and wardrobe styling professionals. All of this comes together to one big final moment - photo-shoot to Juicebox magazine.
I have never been happier in my whole life and stressed but is all worth it. Let me tell you something you already know, London is know as diversity city full of everything - high end fashion labels and designers, new generation of creative people from all the best fashion universities in the world, heritage like know other country have and people from all over the world. That why our shoot is going to represent people of London.

Sometimes I think that people from other Europe countries will think "Why do you even bother to take photos of those weird people?" I'm bother because I believe that right promotion, marketing, understanding of consumer needs is important and people finally should see the beauty everywhere - any shape, any colour, any texture, any pattern, any race, any continent, any individual.
This is what this island gave me - understanding.
And here is the link to our first magazine issue so far.

TEXTBOOK is on his way!

Posted on 25 May 2013

I think you all know that feeling when you meet the deadline and all the hard work you're done comes to one finalised item. This time the item is TEXTBOOK. I know my last sentence probably didn't make any sense to you. Remember when I was keep posting little sneak peaks about my university magazine project? Yesterday it all came to the end - we sent final version of magazine to be printed. Know there are just few little things left in terms of this project, just have hard copy of TEXTBOOK in my hands and do a group presentation if font of tutors Iain Bromley and Rose Percy. Have to admit it I'm really looking forward to it because our magazine Editor-in-Chef Elliot Rose is that person, who simply loves presentations!
I probably have to thank all of the people who helped out TEXTBOOK become what it's now - original, well branded, funny fashion magazine. So here is the list of main people who helped the most.
Our beautiful models - Shell Murray, Emma Sharratt, Anastasiya Nachas and Daniella Averina.
Fanatic make-up artist - Annie Mi.
Quick and professional whiter - Natalie Bell.
Cute and fast leaner of InDesign - Alexandra J Miller.
Biggest shopacholic of the month - Alice Wilson.
The guy with an iPad - Shawn W Clarke.
Stickest but the best criticiser - Rose Percy.
and of course our greatest editor - Elliot Rose.

And everyone who supported me and my team during the process of TEXTBOOK
I hope we will win and our magazine will succeed in London like  Pigeons&Peacocks. Can't what to have it in my hands, even saying it makes me emotional...

Alexandra Shulman at Ravensbourne

Posted on 16 May 2013

Yesterday was THE DAY! Alexandra Shulman (if you don't know who she is, please, leave my blog) visited Ravensbourne and gave an exciting talk about being the it women in British word of Vogue. This women as so brilliant nothing you would expect the Editor in Chef to be like: no arrogance just lovely smile and light, chatty interview.
Alexandra make everyone giggle a little when revealed that the best selling things for the cover of Vogue are pretty girl, pink dress, smiling model (which is rare), graphic, simple, clear lines. I think a lot of people hear about British Vogue realising a series of 4 books called Vogue on... Designers. The first set includes these designers - Alexander McQueen, Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior. The lovely Alexandra gave our university a sneak peak was is about to come in terms of these Vogue on... designers books: there are two more series of four books to come which going to include designers like Vivienne Westwood, Balenciaga and  Ralph Lauren. Book takes to produce less than normal book will take but Alexandra mention that is very hard work for writers that's why she uses the best ones and the most passion able about fashion.

The main question during this talk she gave was - how to get an internship at British Vogue? And I now know the answer! When you apply for internship make sure you tick all these boxes!
  • 3 weeks is the longest period you could work for British Vogue
  • Have experience before
  • Know why you want to work for Vogue
  • Be intelligent and have attention to details
  • Well written letter is a big plus
Other useful information that British Vogue Editor mention to all of us is "don't say what you going to bring to the table, you're coming here to learn not to show and change our practise of work." And the only way you can use to stand out is with the great attitude.
Funny conclusion was when Alexandra Shulman said she never want to work in fashion industry, she was keep saying that you never know where you're going to end up being at.

To sum up, I just want to enjoy and remember this moment for a long time because Alexandra Shulman Editor in Chef of British Vogue doesn't come for every single one of London universities. TAKE THAT, SAINT MARTIN'S!
